His eyes never left the road as the darkness circled around the dingy rusting truck. The flashes of white reflective stripes made the journey seem endless. There was a bright green glow emitted from the digital clock radio as it hissed the sounds of another one hit wonder. He sighed a long caffeinated sigh mixed with cigarette smoke that danced through the crack in the window. Two little bodies were strapped in the back seat slowly inhaling and exhaling in their deep slumber. The neon lights whizzed by slurring their advertisements as the winding distance grew shorter. In one moment of giving in to the weight that teased his lids time slowed down and his vision seemed to be covered with a thick film. The car swerved the tires letting out a tiny squeal and he regained consciousness the children in the back only moaned with a slight discomfort but soon returned to their dream. Now wide awake nothing could break his concentration. He turned his stubble ridden face toward the illuminated vibrating cell phone and fumbled with the cover to get it open. Home calling. “Dave we need bread. I told you this morning remember?” Click then the dial tone sounds. Another sigh escapes its dark enclosure dancing with the moist wind and the phone begins to vibrate again only this time it falls under the seat. Shoot. The road doesn’t seem too bad. As soon as the road escapes his eyes firm grasps he swerves again. He swerves over the double yellow line and viciously tugs on the steering wheel by now everyone is awake and the car is suffocated with young and old screams. What was that? What’d I hit? The car halted and everything grew silent. The wind stiffened and the headlights stabbed through the smoke from the engine and now smooth tires. It doesn’t look like anything is wrong. The kids are fine. I wish they would stop crying though. Is the car slanted? Calloused hands reached for the plastic bumped handle and opened the door. He stepped on to the slick black pavement his big boots barely making a sound. The only sound that could be heard was the water being splashed gently around the hot rubber soles silently sizzling. He cautiously approached the cars front end examined the damage. Hm. A dent but how the heck did it get there? I probably hit a pole. He went to the back of the rusting grey vehicle. It was a gift from his senile father in law. He always hated him. Reaching the side of the car he noticed a stiff hand. While motionless on the pavement wiry grey hair stretched wildly around the stiffened body’s face neck and dangling in the air. What the? The guy came out of no where. Yeah, I can say that. I mean it is true. Hey are you okay? Excuse me? The mans face crinkled Ohhhh… What the heck happened? You hit me with your car?! Tears clouded his vision. After all he didn’t want to hit him it just happened. Shh..Hey man it was an accident. The ambulance is on it’s way. Where does it hurt? The man’s face twisted in to a sinister expression. He threatened to sue wailing and moaning putting on a show. He planned this. The bastard jumped in front of my car. He could of killed us this guy could have killed me and my children. You planned this? Your sick. He turned his head and spat a huge bubbly spit while blood went gurgling to his brain. The man got up slowly he was obviously hurt staggering. The cut above this guy’s right eye caught his attention. Blood drizzled down this guy’s forehead but he seemed pleased. He wanted to punch him right there right in his ripped skin except he wanted his fist to tear it open more, more fresh flesh cracking his skull. I hope no one comes for you. I hope you rot here whatever it is that you wanted is never given to you. He kicked him in the stomach paced heavily towards the smooth pleather steering wheel. The wind was hot on his face. Strapping his weeping gems in to their seats. Turn the car in to reverse and accelerated until his car met a large thump. Turning the car in to drive he sped off the wind cooling the cars warm skeleton.
